THE INSPIRATION GALLERY

IVY AND LAUREL

Alphonse Mucha continued to use a motif of female heads captured within a circular frame after the success of Byzantine Heads. Ivy is presented wearing a garland of her plant and the use of the foliage in the border allowed the artist to transform the circle into a rectangular shape. Laurel wears the foliage she symbolizes in a band through her hair and the leaves are repeated in the border surrounding her. The letter M, designed by Mucha for his own stylized font, is in the mosaic behind her. ©1901 Alphonse Mucha
