PRIMROSE AND QUILL
Mucha produced the series Primrose and Quill (also known as La Plume in French and The Feather in English) at a time when he was considering getting out of decorative arts altogether. Still, he created the pair beautifully in the style for which he is known, with their figures being set in circles and the decorative bordering which surrounds them. ©1899 Alphonse Mucha Primrose is surrounded by the flower which is her namesake. The headdress she wears is classic Mucha as are the lush blossoms throughout the image. Originally, Primrose was titled Flowers but, due to the series bearing the same name, it was called after the blossoms she holds. Quill wears ornate jewelry similar to that seen in the Byzantine Heads series. The delicate feather Quill holds contrasts beautifully with the mosaic framing her face. |
